KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Bernama) -- Cyber security and law enforcement should be improved to overcome leakages on financial information, said Associate Professor Dr Azlina Ahmad, the Assistant Secretary of the Information Technology and Communications Cluster in the National Council of Professors.
She said the scenario not only threatens consumers but could also have a negative effect on the national economy.
"The time has come for a special complaints centre to be set up for people who are victims of leakage of personal information since the police alone cannot resolve this problem," she said when contacted by Bernama.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) secretary-general Datuk Maamor Osman said leakage of confidential information would have a negative effect on the country as well as give a bad image to foreigners who would be worried that their information can be stolen.
He said the Personal Data Protection. Act should be strengthened and its enforcement widened while individuals should be alert and careful in performing online transactions involving their personal information.
Economic expert Prof Datuk Mohd Yusof Kasim, who is also the Rector of the Kolej Universiti Insaniah (KUIN), said leakage of an individual's confidential information could erode the trust of investors and consumers towards the national banking institution.
Echoing his sentiments, International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) economic expert Prof Dr Mohamad Aslam Haneef said the government should review the laws on cyber crime to provide stiffer penalties.
He also urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to set up the best mechanism to curb the spread of an individual's banking information on social media.
