THE Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) lauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s decision in not tabling the amendment to Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).
“The amendment to Act 342 is cruel and doesn’t bring any good to the people and country. Anyone who oppresses the rakyat, we will ensure that they don’t return to be leaders of this country,” said PPIM president Datuk Nadzim Johan, in a statement.
Yesterday during the UMNO annual general assembly, Ismail Sabri announced that the Government would not table the amendment to Act 342 following public outcry that it would burden individuals and businesses suffering due to the pandemic triggered economic downturn.
Under the proposed amendment, the Government was planning to increase compounds for non-compliance to COVID-19 SOP from RM1,000 to RM10,000, with companies being fined up to RM 1 mil.
On that note, Nadzim stressed that the Government should not try to emulate foreign countries in determining the future direction of the country, particularly when it comes to public healthcare.
“Why should we let foreigners decide what is best for us when in Malaysia, we have many experts from diverse specialties who can advise the Government on public health matters especially on how to deal with COVID-19,” he added.
Meanwhile, the PPIM chief praised the Government’s effort for allowing another round of withdrawal from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) to help those affected by the pandemic.
“I’m very grateful to the prime minister and wish him well for the efforts he has made.” – March 20, 2022
