2669) BERNAMA - 26/05/15 - Cooperatives To Help Consumers Reduce Cost Of Living

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Cooperatives will play their roles in helping consumers to reduce their burdens due to the rising cost of living, said Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) president Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah.

He said this could be done through 3,000 cooperative-owned convenience stores and shops, which could be used by cooperative members to their own benefit as smart and wise consumers.

"As of December last year, there are 11,871 cooperatives with eight million members throughout the country...with a large membership like this, the demand for cooperative products in the country is expected to be on the rise, he said at the Consumerism in Cooperatives Seminar here today.

Also present was the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nazim Johan.

Abdul Fattah said Angkasa, with cooperation from PPIM, was also in the midst of looking into new approach to educate cooperative members on the importance of using their consumer power in stabilising the price of goods in the market.

"The consumers have a power to stabilise the price of goods in the market and it is my hope that cooperatives will be able to control the demand of consumers in the country," he added.
