KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 2021: Muslim Consumer Organisation Malaysia (PPIM) has expressed concerns over the safety aspects of the Covid-19 mRNA vaccine developed by biotech firm, Pfizer.
“The mRNA vaccines safety is still unknown, especially the ultra-sensitive and highly unstable one which requires refrigeration of -70 degrees to -80 degrees celsius,” said PPIM chief Datuk Nadzim Johan in a statement.
Stressing that PPIM members are not anti-vaxxers, he said their worries are due to the non-disclosure aspects of the vaccine’s safety, especially its long-term side effects.
He pointed out that in 2016, Pfizer’s anti-dengue vaccine called Dengvaxia allegedly caused the death of 130 children after its approval was rushed for use.
Nadzim urged for vaccine producers to provide all data related to clinical trials by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).
He noted that the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has recorded that the allergic reactions of the Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine as being nine times worse than the flu vaccines.
Among high-profile cases reported on the side-effects of vaccine are the deaths of 29 nursing homes occupants in Norway and about 12,000 people in Israel being tested positive for Covid-19 after receiving the jabs.
Nadzim said Malaysia is the only developing country that ordered up to 25 million doses of the vaccine for 12.5 million of its people.
He suggested for the government to look for safer and more effective alternatives such as the AstraZeneca vaccine, China’s Sinovac vaccine as well as promoting a more hygienic and healthier lifestyle among Malaysians.
“Malaysians must continue to adhere to control measures such as social distancing, wearing face masks in crowded places and frequently sanitize and wash their hands.
“We will oppose the government’s decision to use mRNA vaccine until our concern over the safety aspects is answered transparently,” he added.
