KUALA LUMPUR, June 23, 2015:
The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) and Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) should come up with a law to monitor and address the issue of wasted food items in hotels in the country, including in the month of Ramadhan.
The president of Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM), Datuk Nadzim Johan, said that the wasting of food items within the hotel industry as well as by the general public is something that needs to be addressed.
“It is necessary for KPDNKK or Jakim to put in place a Food Wasting Act to take action towards the hotel industry as well as individuals who waste food whilst dining at a hotel.
“To date, the policies of the hotel industry have resulted in the waste of food everyday, and the amount of waste increases in the month of Ramadhan.
“The practice to waste food by the hotel industry and the public must not be allowed to continue. It is a very bad habit as food is wasted every day,” he said at a press conference here today.
He added that with the price of Ramadhan buffets ranging from RM70 to RM200 and with the serving of up to a maximum of 100 dishes, it goes against the teachings of Islam if all of that food is wasted by the hotels and the customers.
“Displeasing habits such as this must be controlled and we must not let the industry partake in something without proper monitoring. Authorities should regulate the issue and ensure that it does not happen like it does in countries such as Japan, Germany and Sweden.
