The government must strengthen its enforcement in curbing the issue of counterfeit products, especially in the food sector, in the wake of the alleged imitation infant milk formula case recently.
“Previously, we might have imitation in clothes that have no health impact.
“But with the current development, authorities must do whatever it takes to hunt the culprit,” Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association lead activist Datuk Nadzim Johan told The Malaysian Reserve.
“This issue cannot be ignored, we don’t want more victims because of it,” he added.
Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations treasurer Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah offered a similar view, saying there should be no compromise on the consumers’ safety in food products.
He also questioned whether the budget constraint is a factor behind the government’s lack of enforcement efficiency in this issue.
As such, Muhammad Sha’ani said the government should consider allowing non-governmental organisations to establish their independent laboratories to conduct product safety and quality tests.
Last Sunday, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) enforcement officers seized 210 boxes of infant formula, believed to be fake, in five raids in Johor Baru.
Bernama reported KPDNKK Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as saying that it will order the withdrawal of alleged fake instant formula from the shelves based on the chemist report.
He added that KPDNKK will name and shame those involved in the production of imitation milk.
