2563) BERNAMA - 13/2/16 - CALL TO CURB SMS GAMBLING


KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- Some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) today urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telecommunication companies to curb the widespread of gambling via short message service (SMS).

Mobile Phone Owners Association president Mohd Ali Ibrahim said they received more than 100 complaints from the public, who received gambling offer through SMS, for the last six months.

"Telecommunications companies need to take proactive measures to curb this problem like requiring new users to register their numbers through the biometric system practiced by the banking sector," he told reporters here, today.

Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan suggested MCMC to impose heavy penalties against those involved in SMS gambling syndicate.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Education and Intellect Club chief moderator Mohd Nor Izzat Mohd Johari expressed his concern over the alleged gambling activity among school pupils.

"They seem to fall for the SMS they received which offering lucrative gifts and this could indirectly lead to gambling addiction," he said.
