2455) THE MALAY MAIL - 04/02/2015 - Muslim Consumer Group To Launch Online Watch On Pricey Goods After Racial Boycott Call

PPIM chief Datuk Nadzim Johan said the group is gathering data on businesses that refused to lower their prices despite the oil slump, daily New Straits Times reported today.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 — The Muslims Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) will start a website next week listing traders to boycott, following a minister’s call on Malays to stop their patronage of ethnic Chinese businesses to force a price drop.

PPIM chief Datuk Nadzim Johan said the group is gathering data on businesses that refused to lower their prices despite the oil slump, daily New Straits Times reported today.

“This move is to help consumers compare prices before they shop. This is also a way of deferring traders from increasing their prices recklessly,” he was quoted saying.

The website will list traders and their products’ prices for consumers to boycott, adding that the project will involved 20 non-governmental organisations (NGO), Nadzim said.

He added that the move was fair to other traders who were making “decent income”.

The daily also reported the Consumer Protection and Welfare Malaysia Board has set up a squad to monitor prices on the government’s behalf.

Its group president Datuk Seri Dr Saharuddin Awang Yahya said the squad would regularly check wet markets and eateries and will inform the government of their findings.

He said that boycotting traders was a less effective method and the best way would be for consumers to buy goods from government agencies as they offered affordable prices.

On Monday, Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob urged Malays to use their majority power to press the minority Chinese traders into lowering their prices by withdrawing their patronage.

“As long as Malays don’t change, the Chinese will take advantage to oppress the Malays,” the minister had said in a statement on his Facebook page which has since been removed.
